Welcome to UNC Charlotte

Welcome to UNC Charlotte, North Carolina’s urban research university, where great things are happening.

UNC Charlotte is experiencing remarkable momentum. Last Fall, the University rose to #74 among the nation’s top public universities in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings. Over the past five years, we have climbed 85 spots overall, making UNC Charlotte one of the top 10 fastest-rising universities in the country. We were also ranked #38 among US News’ Most Innovative Schools, the highest ranked public university in NC in that category.

Among our most significant recent achievements is earning the nation’s highest research designation, Carnegie R1, announced in February 2025. This distinction recognizes the depth and impact of the research conducted by our faculty, students and partners, and it reflects the bold  trajectory of our University.

As a student at a top-tier research university, you will have opportunities to engage directly with discovery and innovation. Our faculty bring the latest knowledge and real-world insights into the classroom, and many students work alongside them on research and creative projects that address today’s most pressing challenges.

At UNC Charlotte, however, excellence is measured not only by what we discover, but also by how we support our students. Our promise is to provide a welcoming and supportive community in Niner Nation  while helping you stay on track to complete your degree on time, and prepare for success in an ever-changing world.

As you pursue your academic goals, think of UNC Charlotte’s dedicated faculty and staff as partners in your success. Their expertise and mentorship, along with the many resources and services available across campus, will help you achieve your academic, personal and professional aspirations.

Even as we expand our research enterprise, we remain deeply committed to undergraduate education. Last year we launched our “Internships for All” initiative, which provides a guaranteed internship opportunity for every undergraduate student who wants one. Our location in North Carolina’s largest and most dynamic city connects students to leading companies, growing industries, and meaningful professional experiences. These connections give our graduates invaluable hands-on learning and a strong advantage as they begin their careers.

During your time here, I encourage you to explore all that UNC Charlotte has to offer. Take advantage of leadership and volunteer opportunities; attend cultural events and lectures; join a student organization; participate in intramural sports; and cheer on your Charlotte 49ers. he experiences you build beyond the classroom will shape your college years and help define your future.

If you need assistance along the way, please speak up. Our campus community is here to support you. At the same time, I encourage you to  get involved and take an active role in your education and in the life of the University.

It is truly a privilege to serve as your chancellor. I remain committed to strengthening our academic enterprise, providing an outstanding college experience, and always prioritizing the safety and well-being of our campus community.

Thank you for choosing UNC Charlotte. I look forward to seeing you on campus.

Go Niners!

Chancellor

If this is your first year at UNC Charlotte, welcome to our dynamic community!

If you are returning, we are pleased to welcome you back.

You are part of an engaged and enterprising university that is interconnected with North Carolina’s largest city. Because we are situated in a growing and dynamic region, our institution is alive with possibilities to learn and grow. As you explore the academic opportunities available, know that we believe in your ability to succeed and our amazing faculty and staff are ready to help you achieve your goals.

We are dedicated to your education and offer resources to help you along your journey at UNC Charlotte. Niner Central is the place to
go with any of your questions about registration, student accounts or financial aid and the University Center for Academic Excellence houses many tools to support success in your classes. Please meet with your academic advisor early and often, and get to know your professors whether it’s in class, in the lab or during office hours.

Remember, too, that there is more to the collegiate experience than coursework. I encourage you to become involved in some of the many activities or student organizations. By getting involved, you will build relationships with both your fellow students and our faculty
and staff that you will cherish in the years to come.

I hope you will take advantage of the excellent resources available here and explore all that our University has to offer.  But don’t stop there - explore research, community engagement and professional development opportunities in the greater Charlotte area and in the world beyond. We’re here to help you get started.

We are pleased that you have chosen UNC Charlotte. As our University continues to grow, we look forward to seeing your growth as a person, a scholar and a future alum.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Troyer
