Welcome to UNC Charlotte, North Carolina’s urban research university, where great things are happening.
UNC Charlotte is enjoying a strong wave of momentum. Last fall, the University climbed to #74 among the nation’s top public universities in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings. Over the past five years, we have climbed 85 spots overall making UNC Charlotte one of the top 10 fastest-rising universities in the country. We were also ranked #38 among US News’ Most Innovative Schools, the highest ranked public university in NC in that category.
Among our most significant recent achievements is earning the nation’s highest research designation, Carnegie R1 (“very high research activity”) status was announced in 2025. This distinction reflects the depth and impact of the research conducted by faculty, students and partners, and it reflects the bold trajectory of our University.
As a graduate student attending a top-tier research university, you will have opportunities to engage directly with discovery and innovation. Our faculty bring the latest knowledge and real-world insights into the classroom, and many students work alongside them on research and creative projects that address today’s most pressing challenges.
At UNC Charlotte, excellence is measured not only by what we discover, but also by how we support our students. As you pursue your academic goals, think of our dedicated faculty and staff as partners in your success. Their expertise and mentorship, along with the many resources and services available to you, will help you achieve your academic, personal and professional aspirations.
During your time here, I encourage you to explore all that UNC Charlotte has to offer. Take advantage of leadership and volunteer opportunities; attend cultural events and lectures; join a student organization; and cheer on the Charlotte 49ers whenever they are competing.
It is truly a privilege to serve as your chancellor. I remain committed to strengthening our academic enterprise, providing an outstanding college experience, and always prioritizing the safety and well-being of our campus community.
Congratulations on your decision to pursue your graduate studies at UNC Charlotte.
Go Niners!

Sharon L. Gaber
Chancellor

If this is your first year at UNC Charlotte, welcome to our dynamic community! If you are returning, we are pleased to welcome you back.
You are part of an engaged and enterprising university that is interconnected with North Carolina’s largest city. Because we are situated in a growing and dynamic region, our institution is alive with possibilities to learn and grow. As you explore the academic opportunities available, know that we believe in your ability to succeed.
You will be taught by the best professors, mentors, researchers and advisors. Our faculty are creative. No matter what discipline they teach, they find new and inspiring methods to spark their students’ desires to learn and to grow. And they are experts at building connections - with students, with other disciplines, with practical applications and with our greater community.
Remember, too, that there is more to the collegiate experience than coursework. I encourage you to become involved in some of the many activities or student organizations. By getting involved, you will build relationships with both your fellow students and our faculty
and staff that you will cherish for years to come.
I hope you will take advantage of the excellent resources available here and explore all that our campus has to offer. But don’t stop
there - explore research, community engagement, and professional development opportunities in the greater Charlotte area and in the world beyond. We’re here to help you get started.
We are pleased that you have chosen UNC Charlotte. As our University continues to grow, we look forward to you continuing to grow
with us as a person, a scholar and a future alum.
Sincerely,

Jennifer Troyer
