CEGR 4276 - Natural Hazards

Natural hazards dealing with the earth natural processes such as earthquakes, volcanoes, flooding, landslides, and severe weather events are covered.  The basic understanding of the different natural hazard processes and mechanisms are presented within the context of the earth’s internal and external energies.  The course also provides students with a solid understanding of risk as it relates to the potential consequences and impacts to human population and the built environment.  This initial part of the course forms the foundation for the second part of the course which includes presentation of the basic principles of risk management of natural hazards within the context of civil and environmental engineering.  The final portion of the course covers risk mitigation strategies which are discussed within the challenging context that includes a rapid ongoing population growth and the constantly changing land use which affects societal levels of risk acceptance from natural hazards.
