The Graduate Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis offers 21 credit hours of coursework that have been verified by the Association for Behavior Analysis International toward the requirements for eligibility to take the Board Certified Behavior Analyst® examination. Applicants will need to meet additional requirements (including completion of a Master’s degree and supervised field experiences) to be eligible to take the examination. Professionals such as teachers or therapists who wish to gain knowledge in the content area but do not plan to become board certified behavior analysts also make great candidates for the program.

Graduate Certificate Admission Requirements
Admission Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, from a regionally accredited college or university
- GPA of at least 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) on all previous work completed beyond high school (secondary school)
- An online application through the Graduate School’s application system
- An essay of one to two pages describing the applicant’s professional experience and objective in pursuing the Graduate Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis
- A copy of resume, listing the applicant’s education and professional experience
- Unofficial transcripts of all college coursework attempted. Admitted students who plan to enroll will be required to submit their official transcript showing proof of a bachelor’s degree to the Graduate Admissions department before the end of their first semester of enrollment.
- Official and satisfactory scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), if English is not the applicant’s native language and he or she has not earned a post-secondary degree from a U.S. institution.
Certificate Requirements
The Graduate Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis requires a 21-credit hour sequence of courses.
Required Courses (21 credit hours)
Special Policies or Requirements
- Students may apply credit earned as a post-baccalaureate student at UNC Charlotte toward this certificate with program approval. Up to six hours of transfer credit from another institution may be accepted with the approval of the Graduate Program Director or Verified Course Sequence (VCS) Coordinator and the Graduate School.
- Students may apply credit earned in this certificate toward the M. Ed. in Special Education and Child Development with a concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis. Applying credit toward a different graduate degree is at the discretion of the Graduate Program Director.
- Students who successfully complete the certificate with a 3. 0 GPA and no more than one C grade and who wish to apply to the M. Ed. in Special Education and Child Development with a concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis must complete a new application, meet admissions requirements, and would qualify for a waiver of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). No course older than seven years may be applied toward a Master’s degree.
- Students must have an overall 3.0 GPA in the courses with no more than one C grade across the semesters in order to graduate and receive the graduate certificate.
Advising
All students are assigned an advisor upon formal admission to the program. Students should consult with their advisor at least once each semester.
Certification
Students who are seeking graduate-level certification in behavior analysis (i.e., Board Certified Behavior Analyst) through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) must also hold a master’s degree and complete required supervised fieldwork in applied behavior analysis delineated by BACB to be eligible to sit for the certification examination. Licensure
Completion of this graduate certificate program does NOT lead to a North Carolina Professional Educator’s License.
