To meet North Carolina requirements to teach Mathematics at the secondary level (grades 9-12), students must complete a Major in Mathematics and a Minor in Secondary Education.
All program-level Admissions and Progression Requirements are in addition to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Admission Requirements .

Admission Requirements
Freshmen and Transfers - See University Admission Requirements
- Minimum GPA: 2.0
- Prerequisite Courses: GPA of at least 2.0 in each of the following categories:
- All MATH, STAT, and OPRS courses taken
- All 2000-level and above MATH, STAT, and OPRS courses taken
- Transferable Credit Hours: 24
Currently Enrolled Students - Declaration of Major: Change of Major forms accepted year-round. Forms are available on the Math Department website. Orientation/advising session is required after declaration.
Degree Requirements
The B.S. in Mathematics degree with a Minor in Secondary Education prepares students for licensure to teach mathematics in secondary school (grades 9-12). The B.S. in Mathematics degree consists of a minimum of 46 credit hours of core courses in Mathematics (MATH) and Statistics (STAT), including 4 credits of one programming course in computer science (ITSC). To declare the Minor in Secondary Education, students should first complete MDSK 2100 with a grade of C or above, and obtain an application for formal admission to the teacher education program in the Department of Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education. The minor in Secondary Education consists of 35 credit hours, including a dedicated semester of student teaching. General Education Courses (31-32 credit hours)

Total hours to satisfy General Education Requirements may vary as some general education requirements may be double-counted in the major with departmental approval. Please see your advisor for information. Students with a BS in Mathematics major should plan on taking the following courses that meet both General Education and major requirements: - MATH 1241 - Calculus I (3)
- MATH 1242 - Calculus II (3)
- Any science course from BIOL, CHEM, ESCI, GEOL, or PHYS approved towards the Natural Sciences requirement (can double-count up to 7 credits towards the Science Elective Courses).

Select 12 credit hours of approved courses from MATH, STAT, or OPRS at the 3000-level or above, including: Science Elective Courses (11 credit hours)
Select a minimum of 11 credit hours of approved science courses. Any science course from BIOL, CHEM, ESCI, GEOL, or PHYS is permissible. Required Courses for Teacher Licensure
Coursework for students pursuing a Teacher Licensure to teach mathematics in secondary school (grades 9-12) must include: Unrestricted Elective Courses, Double Major and/or Minor to Complete Requirements for Graduation
Students must earn a minimum of 120 credit hours to graduate. This requirement can be fulfilled through a combination of elective courses, a minor, or a double major. The 120-credit minimum must be satisfied regardless of the specific academic path chosen (e.g., a minor combined with electives). Degree Total = 120 Credit Hours

The BS in Mathematics requires an overall GPA of at least 2.0 and a GPA of at least 2.0 in all math major courses is required. Students in the minor in Secondary Education require an overall GPA of 2.50 or above in the student’s total program of study for Student Teaching. |
