MATH 8172 - Partial Differential Equations Harmonic functions, mean-value theorem, maximum principle, Green’s representation for the solution of the Dirichlet problem for Laplace’s equation; Poisson’s equations and the Poisson formula; statement and proof of the existence theorem for general second-order elliptic operators, generalized maximum principles; Sobolev spaces. Evolution equations involving elliptic operators, such as the heat or wave equations, may also be introduced.
Credit Hours: (3) Prerequisite(s): MATH 5174 and MATH 8144 , or permission of department.
