SOCY 4271 - Sociology of Music Considers sociological research dealing with the production of music; the content of music; and the reception and uses of music. Students assess how individuals and groups use music; how social distinctions like race, class, and gender shape the production and consumption of music; why some types of music are considered “high culture” while other types are considered “popular culture;” how the collective production of music is made possible; and what factors facilitate musical innovation and diversity.
