ITCS 8141 - Computer System and Architecture: Performance and Implementation


Exploration of the performance aspects of advanced computer systems and parallel architecture, design choices of computer system and architecture implementation, and use of quantitative performance models to evaluate each choice. The course includes a project for developing or evaluating a selected computer system architecture. Topics include: Parallel computer architecture of Central Processing Unit (CPU) and Graphic Processing Unit (GPU); domain specific architectures such as tensor processing unit or AI accelerators; CPU/GPU memory hierarchy and caching architecture; coherence of memory systems; discrete memory system and offloading computation of accelerator architecture; performance models and metrics for computation; techniques and tools for performance analysis and optimization.

Restriction(s): Ph.D. student standing or permission of instructor.
