Health Informatics and Analytics, Graduate Certificate

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Academic Programs (by college)

The Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics and Analytics (HIA) provides individuals with a foundational understanding of data management and analysis in healthcare. This 15-credit-hour program includes coursework along with required non-credit activities to demonstrate competency. Courses are delivered in person at UNC Charlotte.

The certificate can be pursued independently or concurrently with a related graduate degree at UNC Charlotte. It also serves as the first phase of the Master’s program in Health Informatics and Analytics (HIA M.S.), offering a seamless transition for students who wish to continue their studies. All 15 credit hours earned in the certificate program can be applied toward the HIA M.S. degree.

Students planning to transition into other master’s programs at UNC Charlotte should consult the program director to determine which courses may be applicable. Those concurrently enrolled in another graduate program may double count up to 9 credit hours toward both the certificate and their degree. However, transfer credits cannot be applied to this certificate program.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the general Graduate School requirements for admission to Graduate Certificate programs.  Applications must include all of the materials listed by the Graduate School as typical for Graduate Certificate application submissions.  In addition to the general requirements for admission to the Graduate School, an earned baccalaureate degree from a college or university accredited by an accepted accrediting body in computer sciences, health sciences, information systems, or life sciences or in an informatics discipline or a closely related field is required for study toward the Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics and Analytics.

Certificate Requirements

The Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics and Analytics program requires 15 graduate credit hours.  By the end of the first semester of matriculation in the program, students must complete (or be excused from based upon prior training and/or experience) non-credit asynchronous training modules in computer vocabularies, programming systems, health vocabularies, and classification systems.

Foundational Core Courses (6 credit hours)

Within the first year of matriculation into the program, students must complete these foundational core requirements. The Graduate Program Director may approve substituting another HCIP course for either or both of these classes in cases where the student demonstrates having successfully completed comparable undergraduate and/or graduate coursework.

Certificate Total = 15 Credit Hours
