Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner Across the Lifespan, M.S.N

This concentration leads to an MSN with a focus on Family Nurse Practitioner Across the Lifespan. The Family Nurse Practitioner program prepares nurses to function as Nurse Practitioners to provide care to families across the lifespan in primary care settings. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) examination for Nurse Practitioner Across the Lifespan certification.  The MSN Family Nurse Practitioner program is a full-time, campus-based hybrid program.

Admission Requirements


  1. Unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina or compact state
  2. BSN from a college or university accredited by an accepted accrediting body 
  3. One year of professional nursing practice is preferred.
  4. Overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the last degree earned
  5. Completion of an undergraduate statistics course with a grade of C or above
  6. Statement of Purpose explaining the applicant’s career goal and preparation in relation to primary care and family practice. Identify qualities that make them a strong applicant. (See the School of Nursing website at nursing.charlotte.edu for required elements of the Statement of Purpose).  The Statement of Purpose should not exceed two double-spaced typed pages.
  7. Three references should be from professional colleagues and should speak to clinical knowledge and expertise and one’s ability to function a member of the healthcare team.  At least one reference must be from from a supervisor.
  8. GRE is not required

Application is competitive.  Students are admitted annually in the Fall semester.  See the School of Nursing website at nursing.charlotte.edu for application deadline. 

Degree Requirements


The program requires completion of 46 credit hours in approved courses.

Note


* Clinical Courses require 60 contact hours of clinical practice for each 1 credit hour.  Clinical courses may require travel to clinical sites outside Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

Additional Requirements


  • A minimum of 600 hours of supervised clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner​
  • Students will be referred to the Graduate School for suspension for a grade of C or below in any NUNP course. Graduate students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in order to progress and graduate.
  • Coursework must be completed within six years.
