Return to: Academic Programs (Master’s)
The Master of Architecture (MArch) / Master of Science (MS) in Architecture enables students to pursue a specialized, research-based degree in architecture (the MS) concurrently with their general, professional degree in architecture (the MArch, which leads to architectural licensure).
The following nine combinations are possible:
- MArch I + MS in Architecture - Critical Heritage Studies concentration
- MArch I + MS in Architecture - Design Computation concentration
- MArch I + MS in Architecture - Sustainable Building Technology concentration
- MArch II + MS in Architecture - Critical Heritage Studies concentration
- MArch II + MS in Architecture - Design Computation concentration
- MArch II + MS in Architecture - Sustainable Building Technology concentration
- MArch Advanced Standing + MS in Architecture - Critical Heritage Studies concentration
- MArch Advanced Standing + MS in Architecture - Design Computation concentration
- MArch Advanced Standing + MS in Architecture - Sustainable Building Technology concentration

Admission Requirements
Students must apply to each program separately and be admitted to both programs by the published census date of their third semester (including Summer). For each program, students must indicate the concentration for which they are eligible and interested as part of the application process. No admission requirements established by the Graduate School or by either individual program may be waived. See Architecture, M.Arch. and Architecture, M.S. sections of this catalog for individual program admission requirements. Dual Degree Requirements
Dual degree students must satisfy all individual degree requirements for the M.Arch. and M.S. Arch. in their specific concentrations, with the added benefit of sharing a limited number of credits between the two programs. See the Shared Courses sections below for permissible course sharing. Students enrolled in the Dual Degree M.S. Arch. / M.Arch. program are required to complete the capstones for each program, including the M.Arch Diploma project (ARCH 7104 ) and the M.S.Arch capstone (ARCH 6600 Colloquium for Critical Heritage Studies concentration and ARCH 7900 Thesis for Design Computation and Sustainable Building Technology). Upon successful completion of all requirements, students receive both the Master of Architecture degree and the M.S. in Information Technology degree. Shared Courses: M.Arch. I / M.S. Arch. - Critical Heritage Studies

Grade Requirements
Students in the M.S. in Architecture and M.Arch. dual degree program are expected to earn a grade of A or B in all courses included in the curriculum and must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). As per UNC Charlotte Graduate School Master’s Degree Requirements, students must maintain “an overall GPA of 3.0 or above in courses on the degree plan of study. No more than six hours evaluated as C may be counted toward the minimum hours required for the master’s degree.” An accumulation of three C letter grades will result in the suspension of a student’s enrollment in the program. |
